Selank
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide and a modified analogue of the naturally occurring tetrapeptide Tuftsin. Developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it features a Pro-Gly-Pro (PGP) sequence at its C-terminus, which significantly enhances its enzymatic stability and prolongs its biological activity within the central nervous system.
Research Applications
Selank is studied mainly for its anti-anxiety and neuroprotective effects. Unlike benzodiazepines, it modulates IL-6 and T-helper cytokines without sedation or cognitive issues. It works by increasing enkephalins' half-life, inhibiting their breakdown. Research focuses on its potential to improve cognition, memory, stress response, mood disorders, and sensory-motor recovery, as it can also regulate serotonin and dopamine in preclinical models.
