Melanotan II (MT-2)
Melanotan II (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of the naturally occurring alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It is a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors (MC1, MC3, MC4, and MC5), engineered with a lactam bridge to significantly enhance its biological half-life and potency compared to its linear precursor, Melanotan I.
Research Applications
MT-2 mainly affects melanogenesis and the central nervous system. By activating the MC1 receptor, it boosts eumelanin production for research in photoprotection and UV skin damage prevention. It also interacts with MC3 and MC4 receptors in the hypothalamus, leading to studies on appetite suppression, energy metabolism, sexual dysfunction, penile erections, increased libido, and inflammation modulation.
